Flannel is a weave, not a fibre. The yarn is brushed on one or both sides, which is why the surface feels soft and slightly fuzzy and why the fabric traps warmth.

Weight

Light flannel works as a shirt on cool days; heavier flannel behaves like a light jacket and is better worn open over a tee. If the label gives a weight, treat 150–180 GSM as shirting and 200 GSM and above as outerwear.

Fit

Flannel does not stretch. Check the shoulder and chest measurements and leave room for a layer underneath if you plan to wear it open. A shirt that fits perfectly over a tee can feel tight over a sweater.

Care

Wash cold, inside out, and avoid a hot dryer — heat is what shrinks brushed cotton. Hang to dry and iron on the reverse if needed.
