Most of a shirt's environmental impact happens after you buy it — in how often it is washed, dried and replaced. Fabric choice matters, but so does keeping the shirt in use.

Fabric

Cotton is renewable and breathable but water-intensive to grow. Polyester is petroleum-based but durable, colour-fast and quick-drying, which can mean fewer replacements. Blends trade some of each. There is no universally "better" fibre; there is a better match for how you wear and wash the shirt.

Claims to check

Certifications mean something only when they are specific and verifiable. Ask which standard, which mill and which fibre. Vague words like "eco" or "green" on a product page are marketing, not evidence.

Use it longer

Wash cold, air dry, repair buttons and seams. A shirt worn for years beats a "sustainable" one worn for a season.
